Congenital melanocytic nevus with disturbing clinical and dermoscopic findings.

Abstract

A 5-year-old boy was first observed due to the presence since birth of a melanocytic nevus of the right thumb. The nevus grew in parallel with the growth of the finger. However, in the last six months the nevus grew asymmetrically and presented irregular borders. On physical examination, a 1 centimeter in diameter melanocytic lesion with irregular pigmentation and indented borders (Fig. 1) was observed. Dermoscopy put in evidence a multicomponent pattern with irregular, eccentric pigmentation, globules irregularly distributed mainly in the less pigmented periphery, net and irregular radial streaks in the right site of the lesion. The lesion was removed and the histology showed a compound congenital melanocytic nevus with lentiginous hyperplasia.
